Newest reviews – Reviews May 2011.

The Huntington’s provide a sensible and straightforward method for transforming one’s emotional life and one’s relationships. The level of communication in the world would elevate dramatically if everyone learned their approach. A. Tom Horvath, Ph.D., ABPP, President, Practical Recovery, San Diego Ca.

No Anger Beyond This Point’ is a surprisingly interesting read discussing anger in relationships, suggesting coping strategies, and providing possible parallels with a reader’s own experiences. David Abbott Eur Ing B.Eng, C.Eng, M.I.C.E, Principal, Abbott and Associates, Consulting Engineers, Stevenson WA.

Anger is one of the most divisive emotions that interrupts the connection between couples and their communication with each other – “The Balancing Act” by Vince and Sally Huntington takes you from one end of the communication continuum and places you squarely in the center of a loving relationship.

Experience: In practice since 1980 I thrive on the tougher cases. Method?: There are six basic fixable problem areas for individuals and marriages:

<h8>Difficulties arise when:</h8>
(1) Basic TRUST is violated. (most trust issues are fixable)
(2) Communication fails (she/he just does not hear you).
(3) Family presence obstructs your life style (parent pressures, ill child, siblings, step-parenting, etc.)
(4) Money styles clash (savers marry spenders)
(5) Sex and Affection are misused, misunderstood, out of Sync or out of control.
(6) When you cannot be in a personal relationship including marriage, professional or friendship without losing your own identity by giving your ‘self’ away.

”I use cognitive behavioral methods (checking the way ‘things’ are perceived) simply because they work well and are easily understood”.

There are no two people alike out there. Stop trying to be like everyone else. You count on a therapist for objectivity, I do it relatively well. ”

Experience: In practice since 1980, I work with individuals and with couples. In individual cases: I use our clinics developed Cognitive-Behavioral (common sense) therapy method which examines how things are perceived and acted on daily. It is most effective when a client defines the goals for therapy, i.e.: “what parts of your life would you like to be more rewarding? Which of life’s relationships do you wish were better?” Together we develop the therapy “work” toward revealing what it is the client does that prevents them from enjoying life as they would like to.

With couples cases: We first examine the six basic fixable problem areas couple (or any) relationships ask for help with.

These are when:
(1) Basic TRUST is violated or bruised. (once trust exists, it can be returned.)
(2) Communication fails (she/he just plain does not hear you). Note: Communication is not magic, it is an easily learnable skill.
(3) Family presence obstructs your individual or your relationship life style (parent pressures, ill child, siblings, step-parenting surprises, ‘conditional love’, pets, etc.)
(4) Money styles clash (savers marry spenders) and money rules life.
(5) Sex and Affection are out of Sync, misunderstood or out of control.
(6) One (or both) of you find you have lost your individual identity to the relationship, and had not noticed that until recently.

Whether looking for individual or relationship help, you count on your therapist to provide objectivity. That is what my 28 years experience makes possible.

Insurance
<h8>Method:</h8>
My general style is essentially to “integrate” human connection and cooperation, problem solving, cognitive and emotional understanding and exploration. This connection can be further enhanced with the addition of physiological data generated from biofeedback therapy. My goal is to work with clients using all these factors to improve mood, create more insight into life, reduce physiological discomfort, and increase overall general health and well-being.

<h8>What is Biofeedback?</h8>
Biofeedback is a non-invasive treatment in which patients are connected to a computer via electrodes to obtain information such as temperature, sweat gland activity, muscle tension, breathing etc. This data is then “fed back” and displayed to the patient using the computer monitor. The therapist and the patient use this information to increase physiological awareness; re-train biological processes such as stress response, muscle tension, blood pressure, etc; and generate more physiological/emotional balance. Common conditions that biofeedback has been shown effective for include chronic pain, stress management, hypertension, headaches (migraine and tension), and certain postural/movement problems.

<h8>Experience:</h8>
Dr. Schwartz received his Ph.D in Health Psychology at the California School of Professional Psychology in San Diego, CA and his B.A. in Psychology at Columbia University in the City of New York.

In addition to biofeedback, Dr. Schwartz is also skilled in group and individual psychotherapy with adults, adolescents, and children. Over the past 7 years, Dr. Schwartz has provided services in the Sharp Healthcare System (Pain Rehabilitation Department; Neuropsychology Department), Scripps Clinic, Division of Mental Health (DMH), and Scripps Clinic, Division of Integrative Medicine.

As a cancer survivor and bone marrow transplant recipient [please visit click here], Derek also provides counseling to cancer patients and works with local non-profit cancer organizations for the prevention and treatment of cancer.
I am a licensed Marriage & Family Therapist who has enjoyed extensive experience working with a variety of families, children, adolescents, couples, and individuals. I have a talent for developing positive, dynamic relationships with all of my clients, regardless of their age and circumstance. I know that the most powerful factor in successful therapy is the relationship itself. What is integral to that winning relationship is my ability be warm, respectful, to listen carefully in order learn more about your world. I see each person as a unique individual, who brings many strengths to the table, as well as challenges.

A recent passion of mine includes those on the Autism Spectrum. I have attended numerous workshops, conferences, and I have had numerous clients on the Spectrum. I have the ability to connect very successfully with these individuals and also have success working with siblings and parents who are impacted, too. My life experiences as a daughter, wife, mother, and grandmother give me the balance of my own life history that better informs my work and ability to provide insightful, thoughtful, feedback to my clients. Also, I lost 100 pounds 2 years ago and have kept it off so far!
